Herbs in the House      by Savannah Hague             November 1, 2015

Okay, so I love cooking , and using fresh herbs always gives the perfect flavor. But with winter on its way, outdoor herbs are not likely to thrive.

Whereas you can try bringing in almost any herb, some of the easier ones to grow include rosemary, chives, oregano, thyme, parsley, mint, lemongrass, and vietnamese coriander.

Most herbs enjoy the same temperatures that we do, typically about 65-70 degrees.  Sitting them by the window will give them the sunlight they need (facing south is best but east or west will work as well) but be cautious of frosty windows!

If the temperature outside drops below 50 F, move your herbs so the leaves are not touching the windows since the frost will cause the herb to slowly die.

At home, our favorites to keep are rosemary, basil, and mint.

Rosemary is great with meats and teas. Something to remember about rosemary is that it likes to be on the dry side. This is a plant that can be kept outdoors during the warmer months and will continue to thrive indoors as well.

Chives have a mild onion flavor that is great in numerous dishes from breakfast to dinner.

They are easy to grow from a pre- existing plant. All you have to do is pull up a small bunch with the roots still attached and place them in a small pot half full of potting soil then cover the roots to the crowns with more soil. Trimming the stems a little will stimulate new growth.

Basil is for the more adventurous gardening souls. It takes a lot of tender love and care, but if you can do it right, basil is great in Italian dishes.

I love using it in homemade alfredo sauce, but it is also good in soups and the different varieties create a tasty pesto!

Indoor herb gardens can be fun to make, and can add extra beauty to your kitchen.

You can put a small shelf up on the wall to keep your growing herbs.

Or you could put some old gutters up, instead.

In a large pot, you could keep an assortment of herbs together, but just be wary about differing watering habits for each herb.

Whether you are beginner gardener or a pro, a bit of creativity, careful watering,  and regular trimming will give you an endless gardening season for your favorite herbs.

Have some fun and enjoy your cooking!
